GPS SURVEYING

Here we're using GPS equipment to
set lot corners for a lot subdivision

What is GPS?
Global Positioning System (GPS) is a fast and accurate method of determining the location of any point anywhere on the face of the earth at any time during the day or night, 365 days per year.  The technology collects and processes signals from 24 satellites that orbit  the earth to determine the location of points of interest on the ground.  GPS was introduced for use in military operations as a navigation and timing system.  It has quickly advanced to become one of the leading and most popular methods of surveying.

JW&A currently owns three sets of GPS equipment.

Possible GPS applications:

bulletAs-built and topographic surveys
bulletNatural resource mapping
bulletGIS data acquisition
bulletMonitor well, soil boring and other types of sampling locations
bulletEstablish state plane coordinates or geodetic coordinates
bulletCommunication tower site surveys
bulletConstruction staking - utilities, highways, facilities, etc.
bulletBoundary surveys

Advantages of GPS:

bulletRequires less manpower than conventional surveying (1 man minimum vs. 2 man minimum)
bulletUnits are weatherproof
bulletMounts to an ATV or vehicle for rapid collection of data

GIS Mapping
The information collected by GPS can be downloaded to computer to produce drawings and maps.  Multiple scenarios can be evaluated efficiently and effectively.
